McLean, Va.—Alan B. Levine, a financial consultant and former partner in charge of an entrepreneurial services group at Ernst and Young, LLP, has been named chief financial officer at the Graduate Management Admission Council®. The Council is an association of 154 top graduate business schools around the world and the owner of the Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®).
Levine will be responsible for the Council’s strategic financial vision and will serve as the chief executive’s advisor on financial and business issues. “This is an exciting opportunity with an exciting organization,” said Levine. “GMAC is a leader in the graduate business education industry and is financially strong. Keeping this momentum going will enable us to serve our constituents—including schools that use the GMAT exam and test takers—in the most productive way.”
Prior to taking the position at GMAC, Levine spent three years running his own financial management consulting practice, ABL Associates. Before that, he was part of a team that was brought in to turn around Virtual Access Networks. As CFO for the early-stage technology company, Levine was successful in attracting $10 million in venture capital financing and negotiating concessions from creditors.
As vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer at Marathon Technologies Corporation from 1998 to 2001, Levine built a finance and administrative structure that attracted $25 million in venture capital.
Levine is a retired partner from Ernst & Young, where he was a leader in the firm’s entrepreneurial services practice and its assurance and advisory business services.
Levine spent 24 years with Ernst & Young, working his way up from the audit staff to partner. He headed up the firm’s South Florida Entrepreneurial Services practice before moving to Boston to work with entrepreneurial companies in New England. He provided consultative financial and strategic counsel to senior executives of growth-oriented technology clients and led more than 12 client companies through the initial public offering process.
After graduating from the University of Vermont, Levine served in the U.S. Army—including a tour in Vietnam—and attained the rank of captain. During his tenure in the armed forces, he served as an associate professor of military science at Norwich University in Vermont.
Levine holds a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Arizona. He also sits on the boards and chairs the audit committees of RBC Bearings Incorporated and Nextera Enterprises, Inc.
