New GMAT Test Centers Open in China

Graduate Management Admission Council adds sites in four cities to meet rising demand

HONG KONG (October 14, 2013) — To serve China’s growing demand for management education and the GMAT exam, the Graduate Management Admission Council has added test centers in four cities this year: Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chongqing, and Tianjin in addition to test centers in 12 other Chinese cities. The centers will increase accessibility to the Graduate Management Admission Test, the premier entrance exam for management study worldwide.

“We added test centers in these cities because we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of residents in these cities who are taking the GMAT exam, and we want to help more students and professionals in these cities to achieve their potential. Our goal is to connect talent and aspiration with opportunity, and the new test centers will help make the GMAT exam more accessible,” said Ashish Bhardwaj, GMAC Asia Pacific vice president. “The GMAT exam is the test that provides people with opportunities — and we are doing what we can to meet people where they are.”

Developing education services that match human capital needs is an important component of helping China’s next generation of professionals achieve success. In the growing China market, demand for entrepreneurship and business education has emerged as a solution for boosting employment in a challenging global economy. The business skills and mindset promoted by GMAC provide critical guidance for China’s professionals, advancing their competitiveness on the global market.

As of today, the GMAT exam is used in admissions by nearly 6,000 graduate programs in business and management, including 47 in Hong Kong and 69 in mainland China. Since 2010, a new roster of 32 programs in mainland China have started accepting the GMAT exam, and this reflects progress China’s business schools have made in their global standing. Increasing the quality of China’s education, while also diversifying entrance examinations are all a part of China’s long-term goal of internationalizing its education system. As a global leader in education, GMAC is committed to contribute to this process.

Administered exclusively on computer at more than 590 test centers around the world, the GMAT exam is the only major high-stakes admissions test offered in China every week in all test centers and almost every day in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The four new locations, added since March, bring the total number of GMAT test centers in China to 17. There are now GMAT test centers in the home administrative divisions of 88 percent of China’s population.

The GMAT exam is a three and a half-hour exam measuring four types of reasoning skills: quantitative, verbal, analytical writing, and integrated reasoning. GMAC recommends that test takers register for exam at least 45 to 60 days in advance to ensure appointment availability and sufficient time to meet b-school application deadlines both at home and abroad.
